Authenticity – Be Real On Twitter – See Results From Your Marketing Efforts.

| October 27, 2009

I know what you guys are thinking. Oh great another article telling me to “Be authentic”. Yeah, I feel like barfing every time I hear a guru saying those words in regards to social media and Twitter.  However, they are on to something.  By the time you finish reading this article you’ll not only understand what they mean, but learn how to achieve this “realness” without seeming like a phony.

First of all what does authenticity mean anyway? People keep throwing this word around without giving an explanation of what they mean. Here’s my definition of authenticity. Basically in a nutshell, it means that you should be yourself.  In other words, the people that you network with online should be comfortable with you when they meet you in person because you act the same way online as you do in real life.  That’s it.  That’s what all of the gurus are talking about when they say “Be authentic”.  Oops I said it again!

But why is this important you ask? Great question!  Authenticity is important because people buy from other people they know, like and trust (yes I know another buzz word you hear over and over again).  People can’t get to know you if you don’t give them a chance too.

I know it seems uncomfortable, but you’ve got to give people a chance to see the real you.  Once people see that you are an actual human being and not a robot (yes there are robots on Twitter) they’ll be more likely to click on the links that you post and respond to your messages.

Okay, I understand that I have to be “authentic” and show my personality so people can get to know the “real” me.  But how do I do that?  Again, another great question.  Think of Twitter like a big party.  What would you do if you were at a party and you did not know anyone?  Well more than likely you’d listen to a few conversations and then join a group of people talking about something you find interesting, right? You’d probably introduce yourself and then add to the conversation.

Well you can do the same thing online with Twitter.  You can use Twitter’s search capability to find people to follow that are interesting to you.  You can introduce yourself to those people with an “@” message, then you can start adding to the conversation.  Once you start doing that, then you can start posting messages about your business.

Only start promoting yourself after you’ve promoted something someone else is doing.  It takes some time to get some momentum going on Twitter, but once you do, you won’t be able to stop all of the traffic and sales that Twitter will bring you.  Now what are you waiting for? Jump on Twitter and start tweeting!

3 Ways You Can Use Twitter To Promote Your Multimedia Creations

| May 13, 2009

Multimedia files (audio, video, pictures) can be a great way to get people to come to your website.  You can use Twitter to get people to look at or listen to the multimedia files you have created.  After you read this article you will know of 3 ways that you can use Twitter to promote your multimedia creations.

1.    You can use Twitter to promote your videos.  Many people use YouTube as a way to share their video files.  It’s great that you’ve created a useful video and put it up on YouTube, but how are you going to get people to actually watch the video?  Well it’s pretty simple.  Just get in the habit of posting a tweet to your followers every time you post a new video to your YouTube channel. You can do the same thing if you use sites other than YouTube to host your video.  Another strategy would be to tell your Twitter followers about the video before you create the video.  This creates anticipation in the minds of your Twitter followers.  They’ll be looking forward to your video and be more likely to watch the video.  One other thing…Don’t make the video too long.  People on Twitter have very short attentions spans.  Many tweeps don’t like to be away from the tweet stream very long because they are afraid they’ll miss something.  Your video should be no longer than 5 minutes. Besides, if you try to go longer than that, you might make a mistake and have to redo the video.

2.    Got a podcast? Great! After you’ve taken the time to create useful content, you want people to actually listen to your podcast, right? A great way to that is to just post a tweet to your followers when you’re about to record the podcast and then another tweet when the podcast is ready for them to download it.  Another way to get traffic to your podcast is to interview someone that is really popular on Twitter.  When you’re looking for someone to interview, don’t just look at the number of followers that person has. Be sure to pay attention to the number of people that person is following back.  Look at how often that person engages with their Twitter family.  It will do you no good to interview someone that doesn’t talk to their Twitter posse.  Once you’ve interviewed this person do the same thing you do with your other podcast episodes. Let everyone know it’s available!

3.    Got photos? Use twitpic! Twitpic is an awesome way to share your photos with your Twitter posse.  If your Twitter friend is in the picture be sure to tag them in the picture.  This way they’ll be sure to look at the picture.  They might even retweet it for their followers to see!

Using video and audio can dramatically increase the number of visitors to your site and the number of people that sign up to your newsletter list.  Be sure that you sprinkle in enough personal messages in between sharing your multimedia files so people won’t label you a spammer.  That is one label we can do without.

Twitter makes a Big Splash from Hollywood to the Hudson

| May 4, 2009

For only being a single website it sure has made a splash. Although it shares some of the same ideas as Facebook or MySpace and Blogger its incredible ease of use coupled with its limit of one hundred and forty character micro posts this user generated website is breaking all kinds of records.  Twitter has also been making a lot of news so if you haven’t been keeping up here is what you have been missing.

Due to Twitter allowing third party users to create applications to complement the websites experience for its user’s big names have gotten on the band wagon.  It may be old news that people have been tweeting from their iphones and Blackberry but things may really start to get out of hand with Twitter if “Twiiter” (that’s with to letter “I’s”) the Wii game console based “Twitter like” application becomes integrated with the actual Twitter web site.  You can see how far they have actually come by visiting the Twiiter web site at http://twiiter.wiioperasdk.com/.

When we see more people Tweeting from their living room after losing a game of Wii golf we may see more news like the kind we heard in early April when Demi Moore popularity on Twitter was credited saving the life of a suicidal women who tweeted “I’m just wondering if anyone cares that I’m gonna kill myself now” which may have gone unnoticed if it was not for Demi’s reply “Hope you are joking.” Due to Demi’s huge following on Twitter it was noticed and several people looked at the profile of the suicidal woman and finding her address they contacted the authorities in San Jose her home town and police immediately came in and took her to the hospital for evaluation.

With all that outpouring of cyber help it makes one wonder if or when something goes wrong with the space shuttle instead of relying on NASA to solve all of the problem maybe soon the Twitter community will be better equipped unless they are distracted by playing the new game, “Dead Space Extraction” for Wii due to be unleashed on the public this fall.

If you would like to follow what is really going on roughly 375 miles, or 600 kilometers above our heads you’ll want to follow New York astronaut Mike Massimo who will be working on the real Hubble telescope. You can follow Mr. Massimo on Twitter at http://Twitter.com/Astro_Mike as he prepares for takeoff. Mike also plans to be tweeting from outer space during his mission periodically.

Let’s hope there are just no Tweets on reentry like the ones that shocked the world from Mike Wilson aka http://Twitter.com/2drinksbehind when his plane made an unscheduled landing on the Hudson river early this year.

1.    Mike arguably became the first person in history to serve as several national news agencies “credible news source” by texting tweets from his cell phone from the crash site before and while rescue attempts were still in progress. Turning Twitter not only something not only something news agencies talk about but also a place people are turning to get News first.
